MIENTRAS DORMíAN

Galerie Seippel, Colonia, Alemania.
September - October 2023

Mientras Dormían is part of a period of research developed over the last 3 years, which includes works on cork, metal and clay, as well as drawing and painting. Pure forms are intertwined with sacred symbols, creating objects, reliefs and paintings that have different spiritual aspects: "I am attracted by the behaviour of materials and how, through them, I can explore an interest in rites and myths from different cultures and geographies.

The exhibition presents asbstract paintings that seem not to have been made, mobiles that house small painted steel figures, reliefs in ceramic and stainless steel, interactive pieces influenced by space-time, works that depend on light and whoever inhabits the surrounding space. The artist calls these mirrored works Soul Collectors as they act as collectors of a part of the soul of those, who see themselves reflected in them.

Amalia Valdés presents her broad world view through works created with a meticulous eye but at the same time guided by intuition, playfulness, lightness and chance: I organise ancestral images along with others corresponding to personal situations or the unconscious. I am inspired by ideas that come back to me in my dreams, relevant images from different cultures, concepts from concrete art and sacred geometry; different times of the human being and its creative processes. Mientras Dormían (While They Were Sleeping) seems to be a refuge of symbols, a small cosmos reflecting a sky in movement. It represents a tribute to the creative diversity of human beings, it is also a tribute to infinity, to the earth and its material property; to the original Latin American peoples and to time, that scarce and often unmanageable resource. "Time allows us to understand, value and appreciate. During the pandemic it became palpable, then I became a mother, and I was able to recognise its scarcity, its duration, its waiting. With this work I pay a special homenage to the creative mothers and to my daughters Nina and Anni, thanking them for that precious time, While They Were Sleeping".
